Introduction

T.R., a 57-year-old retired business owner from Ontario, had always been known for his strong work ethic and drive. After selling his business and retiring, T.R. found himself struggling with his mental health, a battle that began at age 39 when he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (and had a family history). His condition led to manic and depressive episodes, characterized by irritability, impulsivity, and bouts of anger. As T.R. transitioned into retirement, these symptoms began to strain his 32-year marriage. Arguments with his wife became more frequent, and his sense of stability seemed to be cracking.

The Decision to Seek Help

“a life-changing experience”

Following a recommendation from his psychiatrist, T.R. considered attending a renowned Canadian mental health and addiction facility, The Residence at Homewood. Despite his hesitation about stepping away from his familiar environment for six weeks, T.R. made the difficult decision to prioritize his mental health. On November 6, he began his six week journey at The Residence in Guelph, Ontario, a decision he would later describe as “life-changing.”

The Treatment Experience

“I had to let go of being the one in control”

Upon arrival, T.R. was introduced to a structured, evidence-based treatment program. His initial evaluation revealed that he was on the wrong dose of medication previously prescribed from his doctor. With the guidance of a skilled Homewood psychiatrist—whom T.R. affectionately called his “quarterback” — his medication regimen was carefully adjusted.

T.R. was introduced to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a form of therapy that proved to be “a perfect fit” for his needs. Beyond one-on-one sessions with his clinical team, he engaged in various supplementary therapies, including art therapy, horticultural therapy, and recreational therapy. The structured daily routine, which emphasized proper nutrition (guided by an on-site dietitian), consistent sleep, and regular exercise, helped T.R. restore his sense of stability.

A unique and symbolic experience during his stay was encountering the “red fox”— a legendary sight on the facility’s grounds. Spotting the fox was considered a rite of passage among many clients, symbolizing progress and resilience.
